Ce document est rédigé en anglais et en turc. Vous lisez la version anglaise.

The short version

  • You can play without an account. If you create one, we keep your email address, your username and how you sign in.
  • Your profile, your public quizzes, your comments and your places on leaderboards can be seen by anyone.
  • With every visit and every game, our servers receive your IP address and details of your device. We use them to run Quizei, keep games fair and stop abuse.
  • We use analytics and error reports to understand how Quizei is used and to fix problems, and we show ads from Google and from our own ad server.
  • We don't sell your personal data, and we don't send marketing emails.
  • You can delete your account at any time in your profile settings, and write to us to use your other rights.

You can change your privacy and cookie choices here at any time.

Who we are

Quizei is run by Beremo Studios Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 16905968) with its registered office at 61 Bridge Street, Kington, Herefordshire, HR5 3DJ, United Kingdom. We decide how the personal data described here is used, which makes us its controller under the UK GDPR, the EU GDPR and Türkiye's personal data protection law (KVKK). You can reach us at [email protected].

This policy covers the website quizei.com, the Quizei app for iPhone and Android, and what comes with them, such as party rooms and the stream modes. Some of our other apps have privacy policies of their own; where they do, those apply instead.

What we collect

When you visit and play

  • A random ID that your browser or the app creates the first time you use Quizei, so that we can tell your games and settings apart without an account. It stays on your device, also when you log out.
  • Your IP address, and what it tells us: roughly which country you're in, your network provider, and whether the address belongs to a data centre or a VPN. We look this up in a database on our own servers.
  • Device details: your browser or app and its version, your platform, language and time zone.
  • Your games: which quizzes you play, your answers, picks and guesses, your score, how long you take and whether you finish. If you play without an account and then sign up or log in, we add that game to your account.
  • Your searches on Quizei.
  • Results you share: when you share a result, we store its card image, which anyone with the link can see.

Your account

To create an account, you give us a display name, a username, your email address and a password, which we store only in hashed form. If you sign in with Google, Apple or X instead, we receive your name, email address, profile picture and an account ID from that service; with Apple, you can choose to hide your email address, and we then receive a forwarding address. If Quizei already has an account with the same email address, we connect the two.

When you log in, and from time to time while you use Quizei, we record when, from which device and app, and from which IP address and country. This protects your account and helps us spot misuse.

Your profile and what you post

  • Your profile: display name, username, avatar or profile picture, bio and the links you add to your website and social media.
  • Your quizzes: titles, descriptions, questions, answers, images, places, the YouTube videos and songs you choose, the questions you add to other people's quizzes, and your edits. You can publish a quiz anonymously, which hides your name from others; we still know that it's yours.
  • Your activity: comments, reactions, ratings and the comments you add to them, the quizzes you save, the communities you create or join with their posts, the players you block, and the reports you send us about quizzes, comments or players.

Images you upload are public. Before we store a photo, we remove the hidden information in it, such as where it was taken. Along with everything you post, we record the IP address and device it came from, to fight spam and abuse.

If you use automatic translation while creating a quiz, the text is sent to Google Cloud Translation or DeepL to be translated. We review quizzes with the help of AI models, currently Google's Gemini: a quiz's text and images are sent for checking, without your account details.

Party rooms

You need an account to host a party room; to join one, a room code and a name are enough. The room shows your name, avatar, answers and scores to the other players. Chat messages and emoji go to the players in the room, and our game servers don't keep a history of them. The game servers receive your IP address and device details, and we keep a record of each room: who played, their scores, and when they joined and left.

Playing on stream

When you play on stream on the website, you tell us your channel, and we record the platform, your channel and your viewer count with the game. To count votes and answers, Quizei reads your stream's chat: Twitch and Kick chats are read straight from your browser, and YouTube chat passes through our servers, which don't store it. Your viewers' names and messages are used only on your screen, for the votes and the scoreboard.

Messages you send us

When you write to us, or report a quiz, a comment, a player or a bug, we receive your email address, the subject and your message, where you sent it from (the page, or the app and its version) and what it's about. If you're logged in, we also see your account, and as with everything you send, your IP address and device details. We reply by email.

Answering by voice

In Word Loop on the website, you can answer by voice. Your speech is turned into text by your browser's speech recognition, which, depending on the browser, may run on its maker's servers (for example, Google's in Chrome). Quizei never receives the audio, only the text.

How we use it

We use personal data only for these purposes, each with a legal basis:

  • To provide Quizei, because it's needed for the service you use: running games, party rooms and stream modes, keeping your account and your content, showing scores and leaderboards, and sending notifications you turned on, password reset emails and replies.
  • To keep Quizei safe and fair, in our legitimate interest and yours: checking that requests come from people, enforcing limits, detecting cheating, spam and abuse, moderating content, and recognising accounts and devices that belong to someone we have blocked.
  • To understand and improve Quizei, in our legitimate interest, and with your consent where the law requires it: analytics, error reports, quiz statistics and the lists of popular and recommended quizzes.
  • To show ads, which keep Quizei free, in our legitimate interest, and with your consent where the law requires it, for example for personalised ads.
  • To meet legal obligations and to establish, exercise or defend legal claims.

What other people can see

  • Your profile: display name, username, avatar, bio, links, when you joined, and how many quizzes you have made and played.
  • Your public quizzes, with your name unless you published them anonymously, and your name on quizzes you added questions to.
  • Your comments, and your name and avatar on leaderboards.
  • Results you share: the result page and its card, which shows your username if you were logged in. A party result card shows the names and avatars of the players in the room.
  • In party rooms, your name, avatar, answers and scores, to the other players.

Public pages can appear in search engines. Unlisted quizzes can be opened by anyone who has the link.

Cookies, analytics and ads on the website

The website stores a few things on your device. Some are needed for it to work; the others come from the tools below.

  • Needed: a cookie that remembers your language (kept for a year), one that says whether you're in the European Economic Area, the UK or Switzerland, which Cloudflare works out from your IP address (kept for 30 days), and browser storage for your login, the random ID above, your settings, your cookie choice, games in progress and party rooms. Cloudflare, which delivers the website, and its Turnstile check, which tells people from bots, also need some of your device's details.
  • Analytics: Mixpanel (on servers in the EU) and Google Analytics record what happens on the site, such as games started and finished and searches; Microsoft Clarity records how pages are used, including mouse movements, clicks and scrolling, to make heatmaps and replays of visits. When you're logged in, they receive your user ID, and Mixpanel and Clarity also your username; Mixpanel also receives your email address.
  • Error reports: Sentry (on servers in the EU) receives details of errors in our code, with your user ID and username if you're logged in.
  • Ads: Google AdSense shows ads and uses cookies and similar identifiers to show and measure them. Full-screen ads between games come from our own ad server, which receives the quiz you're about to play, and uses your IP address and browser details for up to an hour to find your country and count each view once.
  • Content from other services: YouTube videos, Apple Maps in Geo Quiz, Apple Music previews, and the live Twitch and Kick channels shown on the home page come straight from those services. They receive your IP address and may set cookies of their own.

Like any website, the services above also receive your IP address and details of your browser.

How the analytics tools and ads start depends on where you are:

  • In the European Economic Area (the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway), the UK and Switzerland, Google's consent message, a consent platform certified under the IAB Transparency and Consent Framework, asks for your choices on your first visit. Mixpanel, Google Analytics and Clarity load only once you have allowed storing information on your device and measuring content, and AdSense follows your choices too. Google keeps your answer in cookies of its own for about 13 months.
  • Elsewhere, the analytics tools start when the page loads, and a cookie notice lets you accept or reject them. Accepting lets Google Analytics use its advertising features and Clarity its advertising cookies. If you reject, Mixpanel and Google Analytics stop at once, Clarity deletes its cookies at once and stops recording the next time you open the site, and the ads you see are no longer personalised.

Error reports are sent either way. You can change your choice at any time with the link here or at the bottom of every page, delete cookies and site data in your browser, and manage how Google personalises ads at My Ad Center.

In the app

  • Ads: the app shows banner and full-screen ads from Google AdMob. AdMob receives your IP address, device and app details, how you interact with ads and, if allowed, your advertising ID. Where the law requires it, Google's consent message asks for your choices first, and you can change them under Settings → About → Privacy Options. On iPhone, your advertising ID (IDFA) is shared only if you allow tracking when your phone asks.
  • Analytics and error reports: Google Analytics for Firebase and Mixpanel (on servers in the EU) record how the app is used, such as screens viewed, games played, searches and the links you open it with. Sentry (on servers in the EU) receives error reports and replays of some sessions, and of sessions in which an error occurs, with all text and images hidden. When you're logged in, Mixpanel receives your user ID, name, username and email address, and Sentry your user ID and username. Google Analytics can use your advertising ID where your phone allows it.
  • Notifications: to send notifications, the app gets a token from Firebase Cloud Messaging. If you allow notifications, it subscribes to news in your language, and when you're logged in, we link the token to your account to tell you about your quizzes and activity. You can turn notifications off in the app's settings or in your phone's settings.
  • Your phone: the app opens your photo library only when you pick a picture for your profile or a quiz. It doesn't use your camera, microphone, location or contacts. It keeps your login and the random ID in your phone's secure storage, and your settings and games in progress in its own storage.
  • Other services: maps come from Apple on iPhone and from Google on Android, music previews from Apple, and videos from YouTube, through a small player page hosted on GitHub. Expo delivers app updates, and Firebase the app's settings. They receive your IP address when the app loads something from them.
  • Rating the app: after some games, the app asks how you like it. A high rating opens your app store's rating window; a lower one offers a feedback form that comes to us.

Who we share data with

We don't sell your personal data. We share it only with:

  • Providers that run Quizei for us and process data only on our instructions: Google Cloud (our servers and logs), MongoDB Atlas (our database), DigitalOcean (our cache), Cloudflare (website delivery, security, file storage and Turnstile), Google (our email, push notifications and app settings) and Expo (app updates).
  • The analytics, error-reporting and ad services described above: Mixpanel, Google (Analytics, AdSense and AdMob), Microsoft (Clarity) and Sentry.
  • Services for specific features: Google (Gemini) for reviewing quizzes, Google Cloud Translation and DeepL for translations you ask for, OpenStreetMap's Nominatim or LocationIQ for place searches when you create a quiz (they receive only what you search for), and Apple, Google, YouTube, GitHub, Twitch and Kick for the maps, music, videos and stream features that come from them.
  • The service you sign in with (Google, Apple or X), when you choose to use it.
  • The apps you share to, such as WhatsApp, Instagram or X, when you share a result or an invite.
  • Authorities and others, when the law requires it, or when it's needed to protect the rights, safety or property of our players, the public or us.
  • A buyer or successor, if Quizei or our company is sold or merged; this policy would continue to protect your data.

Where your data is processed

Our main servers and our database are in Belgium, in the European Union. Some of our providers process data in other countries, including the United States. The UK recognises the EU as giving adequate protection. For other countries, we rely on the safeguards the law provides for such transfers, such as standard data protection clauses and the UK Extension to the EU-US Data Privacy Framework. When data leaves Türkiye, we rely on the safeguards KVKK provides.

How long we keep it

  • Your account and profile: while your account exists.
  • What you post: until you delete it, we remove it, or your account is deleted.
  • Game results and the IP address and device details recorded with them: as long as the quizzes' scores, statistics and leaderboards need them.
  • Security records, such as login records, the devices and IP addresses an account has used, and blocks: as long as we need them to protect accounts and stop abuse.
  • Messages you send us: as long as we need them to deal with your message.
  • Server logs, which include IP addresses: for a short time, for security and troubleshooting.
  • Analytics and error reports: for the periods set in our accounts with those services.

Copies of deleted data can stay in backups for a limited time before they are overwritten.

Deleting your account

You can delete your account in your profile settings, on the website or in the app. You then have 24 hours to change your mind: logging in during that time cancels the deletion. After that, your account is closed: your profile, quizzes and comments are no longer shown on Quizei, and you're removed from the leaderboards.

We keep a limited record of the closed account, including its email address, username and sign-in details, and records of your past activity, such as game results and security records, as long as we need them to prevent abuse, deal with disputes and meet legal obligations. If you want these erased too, write to us, and we will erase them unless we have to keep them.

Your rights

You can change most of your details yourself in your profile settings. Depending on where you live, you also have the right to:

  • know whether we process your personal data, and get a copy of it;
  • have it corrected or deleted;
  • restrict how we use it, or object to our using it, including on the basis of our legitimate interests;
  • receive the data you gave us in a commonly used format, or have it sent to someone else;
  • withdraw your consent at any time, where we rely on it;
  • have a person on our team look at a decision made by our automated checks, for example about your quiz.

If you're in Türkiye, you also have the rights in Article 11 of KVKK, including learning who we transfer your data to, in Türkiye or abroad, and claiming compensation for damage caused by unlawful processing.

To use your rights, write to [email protected], preferably from the email address on your account. We may ask you to confirm who you are, and we reply within a month. You can also complain to a data protection authority: in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO); in the EU, the authority of the country you live in; in Türkiye, the Personal Data Protection Authority.

Children

You must be at least 13 to create an account (see our Terms & Conditions), and if you're under 18, you need a parent's or guardian's permission. We don't ask for your age. If we learn that a child under 13 has created an account, we delete it. If you think this has happened, please write to us.

Security

Everything between your device and Quizei is encrypted (HTTPS). Passwords are stored only in hashed form, and only the people on our team who need it for their work can see personal data. No way of sending or storing data is completely secure, but we work to protect what we hold. If a breach puts your data at risk, we'll tell you and the authorities as the law requires.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page. If a change is significant, we also tell you on Quizei, or by email if you have an account, before it takes effect.
